My mother has lost it! (Meat related question)

I just heard from my sister that my mother is on this giant "all natural" binge that some crazy lady at her church got her on(lets leave that one alone, that's another topic) regarding not eating meat and milk because of the hormone treating that a lot of meat and milk cows get.

I feel like the benefit of doing that greatly outweighs the cost.. plus.. it's meat... how can you not eat it?!(read: sarcasm here, if you're vegetarian and healthy about it all the more power to you) She's trying to force my sister to do this as well.

Is there some kind of sources anyone knows of that can show how bullshit this is? or is it really that big of a deal? I'm not too educated on the subject but some random googling I've done shows it's mostly exaggeration.

Worst "fact" ive heard from her so far - "eating meat takes calcium out of your bones". I know that phosphorus in meat can counteract calcium levels, but shit how much meat would you have to eat for that to actually have a negative effect?

Someone help me out here! <3

Well without protein from the meat, and good fats from milk and other dairy products (yeah i know you can get goof protein/fats from peanuts n' such) body will be weaker. If she does any sort of exercising at all, she won't be getting the protein her muscles need, and become all flabby... I found this interesting facts about alternatives though:

    http://www.sustainabletable.org/issues/hormones/
    What You Can Do
There are many small family farmers who don’t use artificial hormones on their animals. By purchasing your milk and meat from local, sustainable farms, you are supporting a system that ensures the health and welfare of the farm animals, and protects you and your family from hormone-related health risks.

Choose hormone-free beef and rBGH-free dairy products at the supermarket. Foods that carry the “USDA-certified organic” label cannot contain any artificial hormones. When purchasing sustainably raised foods without the "organic" label, be sure to check with the farmer to ensure no additional hormones have been administered.
Visit the Eat Well Guide for an online listing of stores, restaurants and producers that sell hormone-free meat and dairy products.
Use Sustainable Table and Food and Water Watch’s rBGH-free dairy list to find a list of rBGH-free brands available in your state.
and this article was interesting as well:
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...t-disease.html

Modern farming methods have cut fat levels, which can be even lower than chicken, while red meat provides high levels of vital nutrients, including iron.

A vegetarian having a Cheddar cheese salad will eat seven times more fat, pound for pound, than lean red meat contains, says a review by the British Nutrition Foundation.
If she's in her 40 something (taking a wild shot) I'm sure she's been exposed to it long enough for it not to really affect her, and I'm pretty sure shes not worried about starting puberty before her pre-teens. She will be fine...

From what you posted your mother is avoiding meat, which generally will provide her with a healthy diet- assuming she doesn't replace it with pop tarts and potato chips and gets enough protein. Is there something else in this diet that is "crazy"?

    edit:

this has some good information you can send to her about what vegetarians need to do if she keeps up her diet

She's 52, and my sister is 13, so neither is a valid concern.

I don't care if she stops eating meat, that's her personal choice. She's also trying to force my sister who still lives with her obviously to do the same though. And she has started buying Organic EVERYTHING, which when they are always living bill to bill, seems like something that should be on the backburner.

My biggest problem is I feel like just stopping to eat meat and drinking no milk is hurting them more than helping them.

you do understand vegetarians can have perfectly healthy diets and that modern meat is loaded with fuck tons of hormones and weird shit that has been linked to cancer and strange growth developments (early periods, etc).

Or are you more of these "facts second, kneejerk first" kind of people?

Overcompensation for years of prepubescent fatness. I'd still use the term "muscles" very lightly.

Is there solid evidence that having them in moderation actually does that? Or that having a full on vegetarian diet with supplements is going to make that much of a difference? I wasn't saying that she's completely wrong and I'm completely right, but some of the things they suggest seem asinine to me.

    Did you read the

? I don't really know wtf so I'm hoping there can be some good discussion here as to what's what or ideas.

I don't see how your mother has "lost it," and none of this seems like a big enough deal for you to freak out over.

When shes spending hundreds of dollars buying their supplements and drinks etc and calls to complain to me on a weekly basis how she cant afford bills, I'm seeing that as starting to lose it. not to mention pushing it on everyone else on the house to do the same (my dad won't have any of it but my sister is basically being forced to)

Also, I'm not freaking out. honestly, I could just never think about this again and it's done with but... I'm slightly concerned for my sister and I feel like I should at least make an attempt to try to get her to see what she's doing and how to make logical choices.

There's one thing in trying to live healthy, there's another in embracing a completely crackpot diet program that makes you buy supplements that are overpriced, and completely make shit up.

Your mom will be fine doing a healthy vegetarian diet, but she'd be doing herself a disservice by following a site with a nutritional plan from the book of genesis. Tell her that if she chooses this lifestyle, she needs to do adequate research, because a healthy vegetarian diet takes a lot of work.

Being concerned of how royally fucked up the things that most places put in their meat and such is a good notion, but the alternative isn't to eat lettuce and cucumbers all day. Get some grass-fed beef from a reliable source. Buy your shit from Farmer's Markets if you care that much.

For the record, everything has been linked to cancer at this point. I'm of the opinion, if your gonna get cancer your gonna get cancer.

If you get cancer, it's God's will.
