android phone not recognized via usb

Up until about 3 hours ago, I had my android phone working fine, able to use pdanet to share its internet connection with my pc, able to transfer files across usb no problem.

Then I had to go, unplugged it, came back, plugged it in, and all of the sudden nothing works.

When I plug the usb cable in its still telling me that usb debugging is connected, but no usb data connection is available.

In my device manager, when I plug in this phone, the adb interface does not show up.

I have tested using my fiances phone, and hers works fine on this pc, adb interface shows up when i plug it in, can transfer files.

edit: something else that may help narrow down the problem -

I also tried connecting my phone via wifi using foxfi from the problem phone, it connected to the internet ok, but it said limited connectivity, no internet access, when i tried to diagnose the problem it said that the network did not have a valid ip address setup/structure(unsure of exact wording). when i try this with my fiances phone it works fine, full internet access

What could be preventing my phone from working as it was?

Do you think flashing a new rom(currently stock rom as i never had a need to flash my phone, though I'm familiar with the process because I've flashed several different roms to my gtablet) onto my phone would fix the problem?

Both phones are the same make/model, lg optimus s(no cracks =P, i know its like the crappiest touchscreen phone evar, due for an upgrade in jan).

If you do think flashing would fix it, do you have any suggestions for roms?

Dirty usb port or cable. Turn phone off, remove battey and dust it off with a can of air.

If you got electrical contact cleaner can dip the usb cable on it and plug to the port to clean the contacts.

wifi connectivity leads me to believe its something more involved than the cable/port, though i'll give your suggestion a try - did all my tests with the same pc/usb port/cable, only swapped out the phones, so the only thing it could be would be the port on my phone as far as hardware.

i must have reinstalled adb drivers about 15 times by this point so i think we can rule that out too, it has to be something specific to my phone as just swapping the phones using the same equipment yields different results.

Format/erase cache and dalvik cache from recovery before flashing anything. If problem persists then flash.

But I'd just reflash stock tbh

i've never installed clockwork mod on my phone, is there a recovery menu on the stock rom? if so how do i access it? holding the volume + or - while powering up?

edit: nvm its part of rom manager

edit: omfg, i just rooted my phone and it fixed it. I guess rooting it forced the usb connection to work and fixed the problem.
