It reduces normal damage by 25% and makes it magical.

look at the SS... his dmg doubled to tripled on a mob tha is normally heavily resistent to melee.

Formless Strikes turns physical attacks into magical attacks. So yes, mobs that are resistant to physical/have high defense will be FOILED!! by FS.

Based on testing so far (fairly limited), Formless Strikes does exactly 2 things:

A) turn your melee hits regular damage into the same class of damage as Chi Blast/Spirits Within
B) cut your damage in half compared to what it would have normally been against the mob's defense stats

It doesn't make you ignore defense and VIT, it just makes your ignore Invincible and physical damage resistance (such as physical shield abilities, presumably physical shield modes like Omega, natural physical filters on elementals or mimics...). It also has no effect whatsoever on TP given by your hits despite the fact that normal Chi gives no TP. So if your punches are giving the mobs 5.5 TP each (SB applied) they'll still give the same amount with FS on.

Now considering it cuts your damage in half, its basically useless against mobs where the initial resist factor was 50% or less, like mimics (ie if you're hitting the mimic for 60ish to begin with instead of 120, you then use Formless and tada still hitting for 60, now its just magical instead). Its definitely great against elementals and PLD mobs during Invincible, but that's pretty damn specialized use.

One thing I thought it might good for (before realizing the exact damage type it became) was for icon soloing and eyes in Dynamis, but because it becomes Chi type damage which those mobs have a 90% reduction filter against, you'll be hitting for 0-10 (meaning less than with plain regular melee).

About its relation to def and VIT, based on my personal tests it doesn't ignore them at all. Your damage becomes magical only after defense and VIT are applied. Lets say you're meleeing Genbu, who has mad VIT and def but no actual physical filter and your normal hits do 0-80, turn FS on and they'll do 0-40.

Most likely getting it at lv2 and 3 will reduce the filter applied to your damage by 5% each time, so you'll hit for 60% of normal damage instead of 50%.

Have you tested it on a turtle or is that just an assumption? I'm curious...It seemed like a pretty nice buff for HNM MNK, along the lines of Flashy Shot for RNG and Abs-TP for DRK, but if it doesn't ignore defense, then Chi Blast it is >.>

He didn't lie or say anything about it other than he was looking forward to trying it out. I just watched him pop it as Genbu invincibled and then he wailed away. I have all damage turned off except for myself. Since Genbu dies so fast, I just assumed it went through when I saw a chunk of life drop as he did it. He did pull hate I had thought (Genbu turned to face either him or someone on his side), so I assumed it went through

If anyone made a mistake, it was my observation.
