I was sitting on the couch today, watching my daughter dance to the music on some kids show called Dora the Explorer. As I sat there, she waddled over to me and said something that truely disturbed ...no...angered me.

She said "azul", the spanish word for blue. She can say a few words, like dadda, mamma, bottle, baby, etc. - but that word was unmistakable.

At that moment, I realized that half of the kids shows she watches on the kids channel teach spanish words through it. They repeat them over and over, and relate them to things kids understand.

This pisses me off. Why are we excepting this epidemic of allowing the spanish language to take control over the english language in this country?

Before you argue that it's simply educational to know a second language, tell me why you dont have to push 1 for instructions in French on the 411 directory assistance. Tell me why you dont see German subtitles on common household items at the grocery store.

I'm an american soldier, 4 years active, now in the reserve, a staff sergeant E6. I'm a patriot, and I dont like the way this is going for the country I love and serve. We're allowing this shit to take control. We're in fact losing control over the dominant language and culture of this country.


Or am I simply looking too hard in to things? Personally, I'll treat her saying spanish words the same as I would her saying a curse word. She'll be in time out, and told "thats naughty". She can learn Japanese, German, Italian, French...even Spanish - but not against her will, and not because we are laying down and simply accepting that the illegals are in such strong numbers that we're being forced to learn THEIR language.

I think you should take it with a grain of salt.

From last I checked that was like the only show on English television that was teaching Spanish to kids. Now if Big Bird started saying "ME LLAMO BIG BIRD SOY MUY GRANDE!" then there might be something to worry about.

Maybe it's a local thing too, English is always the first option on directories where I am. Actually, most of the time the phone assumes you speak English, and only asks you to press a number if you don't.

If some Hispanic enterprise out there wanted to make a show that focuses on educating kids about the aspects of Spanish, I don't think it's that big of a deal. Just relax and make her watch some Barney, Thomas the Tank Engine, or Sesame Street if it bothers you that much.

1 - not all spanish speakers are illegal immigrants.
2 - like it or not spanish is the second most widely spoken language in america and learning it is an advantage in many ways.
3 - if you have such a problem with dora the explorer then dont let her watch it.
4 - please dont mention "losing control over a dominant language or culture" when speaking about america, a country that was founded on the destruction of countless native american's cultures, not to mention that little thing called slavery. yes, this all happened a long time ago, but its circumstances were a lot worse than the current situation in america in terms of the influx of latinos.

I can appreciate your sentiment, I really can. I dont think that there isn't a beauty in latin culture, and I want my and all children to know and appreciate it.

I just don't want it to become a defeatist attitude that since we cant force the now, what 50-60% population of mexican immigrants that are illegal to learn English that we have to learn theirs.

Simply put, you're crazy... you are suppressing your daughter's ability to learn a second language(to a certain extent)... it's not taking over the English language it's a supplement. I'm also in the military, however 2 years except 4... where have you been deployed that's brainwashed your mentality, you are letting something clearly harmless get to you so much. Perhaps you should seek some counseling(totally serious here) and get a professional opinion on your "dilemma"

A pick up pulls in, yells 10 dollars, 3 hours and they bum rush to be the first 2-3 to get in the truck, it pulls away and they go do their work on a farm or whatever.

I don't live in New Jersey, but your view of Hispanics doesnt represent the vast populace that uses the Spanish language... perhaps it is where you live, because I've never seen anything like that (and I lived in Texas, specifically San Antonio for 4 months once too)

That's SUCH an incorrect stereotype. Yeah, all white people speak like that. Where do you live in america, Alabama? I live in the south, and most people do not speak like that. Why not bring up ebonics? Don't want to sound racist?

I don't think there is a lot to be afraid of, but I do agree, it bothers me. Especially when you have to talk to the people at their job. This whole mind set "Spanish" is equal "English" is making me have to deal with people who expect me to know Spanish. I don't know if the somewhat racist phrase "Hispanic women are like photocopiers is true or that maybe this entire country is being populated by millions of illegal Mexicans, but they are not steady growing... they are multiplying. Within 50 years, if the rate doesn't stop, there will be 5 Hispanics for every 1 White(and probably 1/5 a Black). A long time ago, there was a debate whether the US's main language would be English or German, and English won, and it should stay that way. Despite being a nation of many mixed cultures, we still have our own culture and to lose that is to lose our idenity.

My dad is currently employing four illegals with his restaurant. They arrive on a bus from New York City(or somewhere close by) every morning and go to work, then get a ride back to their bus stop after work. Let me tell you, these guys can work. I used to work there until I was old enough to work at the mall near me, and they did amazing things on the most busy of nights. I've never seen harder working people who actually legally live here. They are the superior workers, payed less, work tons harder, and work longer. If tough when you think about it, because it isn't exactly right. Anyway, I'd say out-sourcing is hurting US citizens more than anything else.

On another note... Hispanics are Native Americans who were forced ideals from the european Spanish. It is kind of poetic justice that they slowly take over the US in numbers. Then again, almost every hispanic 14-18 year old I've ever met couldn't spell Native American.

language evolves, the english language, any language for that matter, is not the same as it was in previous years and it continues to change.

this is a proven fact and is studied by language professionals, there has even been case studies done and theories towards what our language will be like in 20, 40, 100, 200 years from now.

People had these same complaints 80 years ago with the Irish and Germans, first generation immigrants tend to not learn the English language as much as second or third generation, and retain a lot of their former culture. This of course scares Americans, because they're different and not "Americanized." Assuming the immigration wave slows down in the next 10 years or so, the next generation of Hispanics will be as Americanized as any other culture group.

Even if it does and Spanish eventually becomes a second language, who cares? America needs to smarten up anyways. European schools teach no less than 2 languages before high school, many times 3-4. In America we have kids who can barely read and write ENGLISH by college. Upping our standards on language comprehension isn't a bad thing, it makes us a lot more versatile in world affairs.

so true. i find that most people that have issues with illegal immigrants is the idea they are "taking peoples jobs." first of all they often do stuff that most americans would not want to do, often involving hard manual labor. they also often do this for a lot less than minimum wage, thus if you want to get mad at someone, blame the guy who pays them next to nothing to take advantage of them (not saying your dad does brp, if i were him i would do exactly what hes doing simply because he observed them working harder.) good point about outsourcing too.

Mexicans are the most ignorant, racist people I've ever met, lol. I work with them everyday (I work in a restaurant) and they love to abuse that language barrier and say shit to us in Spanish, but I understand a good majority of it. I can't tell you how many times I've been called a gringo.
