How do you correctly break a linkshell so that someone else can select the name again? Nothing I've tried or researched has allowed me to successfully break it.

i think you just drop the main pearl
If you drop the main pearl the name does become available usually instant, or within an hour or so to anyone which uses the name within that "time frame".
So the only way to keep someone from using the name is to keep the pearl, or buy another linkshell from the NPC, and name it the same thing on a mule right after dropping the original one to keep someone from jacking it if thats what your worried about.
I should have mentioned that dopping our old pearl was the reason we are unable to remake the name.
After every LS leader election we break the shell so that it can be remade by the new leader. However this time after we dropped the shell it wouldn't let us remake it. After speaking to several GMs supposedly the old shell holder was supposed to break the linkshell instead of dropping and now our LS name is gone forever.
Because of this we've bought new pearls to pick a new name. However, after making a few I didn't like I cannot figure out how to break it the right way.
I can add here that there should be minimal delay from rerolling with the same name. We did a break->reform and it was pretty much instant
A year ago (or so) while I was still playing. I literally used to break tons and drop plenty of shells always to get the right color for our shell. Its weird the GM told you that since I was always able to do it without a problem. Whether dropping or breaking the shell. I guess they changed it or something? Or just GM hish-hash talk.
After a few more tries I found the correct order to be to /breaklinkshell, drop it, and then I was able to remake it.
