    DJ Hero

Following last month’s rumors that DJ Tiesto might be involved in the development of a DJing version of Guitar Hero (since then DJ Tiesto has dispelled those rumors), Activision Blizzard’s CEO Robert Kotick confirmed to CNBC that a DJ Hero game is on the way, and will come with a turntable controller much like how mock guitars are used to control Guitar Hero.

“We have a product called DJ Hero that’s coming out later this year which is a turntable that you can actually play competitively and spin discs and mix songs,” he said.

Coincidentally, Guitar Hero was a huge success for Activision, with much of its 2008 $616.3 million turnover reportedly coming from sales of the game.

A DJ Hero game then might further propel DJ culture into the mainstream, as more kids get into the scene for real after enjoying the game.

No details have been released about gameplay, or how the game will take shape.

First DJ Hero Details: Turntable Controller, Mash-Ups, Guitar Co-Op

Recent Activision acquisition FreeStyleGames is hard at work on DJ Hero, a music rhythm game that will let gamers scratch to the beat of popular mash-ups with a laptop turntable peripheral, informed sources tell us today.

The game, which has been in development for nearly two years, is expected to hit shelves next summer and will likely include the ability to use Guitar Hero guitars for versus mode face-offs.

The controller, key to the game's success, has been through nearly a half-dozen iterations.

In the latest form, the device looks a lot like a simplified DJ Deck. There is a platter for scratching which will act like the strum toggle on a Guitar Hero guitar. Above the platter are three buttons for sampling. The controller also includes a cross fader and a sound effects dial which will act like the whammy bar in Guitar Hero.

Instead of flowing the musical notes down a guitar neck, DJ Hero will flow the music down and around a virtual record in a half arc. Either left top to middle bottom if you are left handed, or right top to middle bottom if you are right handed.

To play you will have to either hold a sample button and scratch, just hold a button or just scratch as the neon icons flow around the virtual vinyl.

Currently the wireless controller has grooves molded into the bottom so it will sit comfortably in a player's lap, though the team is also looking into legs for the deck so gamers can play while standing up.

The game in its current form features all mash-ups, think Beyonce Vs Jimi Hendrix, 50 cent Vs Beastie Boys. If they can nail the interface and get licensing for the music this could be a mammoth hit. Then again I love mash-ups.

I'm so fucking tired of Activision remaking Konami bemani games and having all these idiots cream their pants over how awesome and original the games are. Next they are going to make dance hero with 4 fucking arrows and put even more shitty songs than the american version of DDR get.

Perhaps you should actually read the articles and look at the pictures of the controller. If you saw DJ Hero and thought, "Boo IIDX ripoff" without actually reading about it, then you're an idiot. For the record, I think DJ Hero is going to suck balls. I'm just saying, they really aren't hijacking any old Bemani games this time.

Anyone ever play that arcade game, there was 5 keys (like piano keys kinda), and then a little record thing you could turn, and the notes would start at the top of the screen and come down. One of the "notes" was to spin the record thing. That game will probably be better than this is there's only 3 buttons (compared to the 6 from that game).

I admit I didn't read the article, I just felt like venting from hearing all of the people where I live bash any music game besides Guitar Hero.

Well what I meant was it seems kind of similar, and was just pointing out the fact that if there's only 3 "samples" on DJ Hero then it might end up being too easy, unless I'm misunderstanding the way it's set up.

Closest you will get to this is a Guitar Freaks clone in Japan that uses Japanese style lutes. Can't remember the name of it right now though.

    edit: found it
