Mijin Gakure - Barfira: Placebo?

I'm tired of arguing with people about this so I call upon BG to help me settle this. I tried searching and couldn't find anything about this(maybe I'm blind; I'm kinda shocked I didn't see anything about this).

Does Barfira help reduce the damage done by Mijin Gakure?

tl;dr Magic Defense Bonus, Shell, etc or GTFO, right?

Seeing as Ifrit takes full damage from Mijin Gakure instead of absorbing it, I'd say it isn't fire based.

HP of the mob and -magic dmg gear/shell are the only things that reduce mijin afaik

I have the same problem in my LS. It's one of these most annoying "myths" in the game. OMG Mijin looks like fire! It must be fire based! Even after I tell them the only way to reduce the damage is to lower the mobs HP and use magic def/-magic dmg gear, I get the old "I notice a huge difference with barfira on".

Just drives me absolute bat shit as minuscule as it is lol

If you have barspell merits or blessed brialt, it also adds to magic defense, so its not completely useless.

edit: in this regard, any barspell would work the same.

that's MDB versus the corresponding element though, in which case, it wouldn't do anything for you if mijin is non-elemental.

Don't get confused. Marginal benefit is different from Zero benefit. The opportunity cost of losing haste/attack/accuracy/enmity/HP/MP/MAB/etc on the slot is what makes DEF far less important. Don't go spouting off like DEF and VIT do literally nothing, because that is not the case.

It would be more correct to state that DEF does virtually nothing, unless you reach certain levels of it.

These levels are very impractical to even consider which makes them essentially an issue of zero benefit, this since you gimp yourself so much in that regard to get them that you take ten steps back to take a half one forward.

There are some cases in which it is useful, but generally speaking not at all (PLD/BLU supertanking shit for example).
