Wireless USB adapter + Wireless router

I have always had a wired network, but I recently got a free NetGear Wireless-G USB2.0 adapter and would like to go wireless now that I have moved. The router would have to be with one of our desktops in a bedroom (connected with an ethernet cord to our modem), behind a wall, but would have to allow a laptop and desktop in the living room to connect with a great signal, too (we game in the living room).

What would be the best wireless router to accomplish this, and if it is not a NetGear router, would any other brand also work with the adapter I was given? The box says "For maximum performance to use with a NetGear router" but is that just bs to get you to buy from them?

Yeah BS to buy from them.

As per every other router thread, you're going to get the usual "whatever DD-WRT supports" (http://dd-wrt.com/) "I have a linksys WRT54GL I got on ebay really cheap and flashed with DD-WRT, works really well!" and "Buffalo products are good"

DD-WRT is basically just a modified firmware, which unlocks all the potential out of your routers hardware, and makes it run like a professional (and very expensive) router. It adds many options, too many to list off the top of my head, as well as having an intuitive interface which makes customising and configuring really easy. Particularly, it can be used to boost the signal strength of your wifi, has very easy to use port forwarding modes (if you have a games console etc. this makes connecting a breeze) and is incredibly stable and very tight as far as security is concerned.

Alright, as per your example I'll buy the WTR54GL router. It got great reviews on Newegg and it's moderately priced. Sounds good to me.
