    PC lags like hell.

OK, I had a problem where my video card had an exclamation point next to it in the device manager. According to the trouble shooter I should uninstall and reinstall the drivers, or update them. I updated them first with no change. I then uninstalled then reinstalled them with the original nvidea disk it came with, with no change. I then just bought a new card to see if it helped and after installing it the device manager showed it was working properly. I then noticed after like 5 minutes my mouse was super laggy. I tried to shut down but after clicking the start tab it took a minute to actually open, then clicking the shutdown button it also took a few minutes to open. The whole time it took to shut down the PC was like 10 minutes. Any ideas what may cause the lag? I assume I have more problems than the video card. It all started when I was on FFXI and the game crashed with the graphics went to crap and had to manually shut down since I couldn't see much.

I suggest you do a Virus + spyware check

after that maybe check your memory with memtest

don'T forget defrag if you havn't done it in a while!

I'm not sure I will get through a virus/spyware check since after like 5 minutes the PC lags so bad. I wasn't sure about how to test the memory so thanks for that. The PC is only going on 3 years old.

I had a similar problem, and it was the fan on the heat sink for my video card not running.
I would have to reach into the case and thump it to kick start it. would work fine after that.

The problem started when my game crashed due to the graphics going all nuts. I bought a new video card and so far that seems to be ok, but the lag issue is still there. I haven't let it run long enough to see if it locks up though.

Yeah it sounded like the old card died. You should try booting up into safemode, uninstalling the old drivers and updating to new

I'd recommend the same. If you go to Nvidia's site (guessing your new card is also Nvidia?) you can use the automatica detection to get the most up-to-date drivers for your card, then once they're downloaded you can boot to safe mode, uninstall the old, consider using Driver Sweeper to clean out the remnants, then reboot and install the new. If it's legitimately driver related then that's really the extent I can think of to address it.

I had a Ge Force 8500gt in it when the problem happened. I bought a EVGA GeForce GTS 250 and before installing it I uninstalled the old card/drivers then installed the new one. The device manager used to have an exclamation mark saying it could not load, now with the new card it shows as working properly. I would also like to add that last night I tried to run virus scan and in normal windows it lagged so bad it took 20 minutes to scan 17k files. I then booted in safe mode and scanned with malwarebytes and ad-aware with zero lag issues the whole time. When I boot up the PC it is fine for like 5 minutes before it goes to crap.

Does your powersupply have the 6pin PCI-e power cord thingy? (cant think of a better name for it >.>) and is it plugged in? I'm not sure how the system would react to the card not having sufficient power

Incase it's actually not the video card causing problems, is there onboard video to plug in your monitor to see if your pc still lags in general? Maybe test the card in another computer if possible.

I want to say that there isn't on board video. I am at work atm so I can't check. The new card has a cable that connects to the cardf with 2 4-pin connectors for power on the other end. I have them both plugged in, well 1 side to the card and the 2 4 pin connectors on the other end.

Well I uninstalled what I could find, but it went back to being the same. I noticed an Nvidia folder which looked like 2 folders of drivers in it. I uninstalled everything again, deleted the folders and re installed the new drivers and still, it acts the same. According to Nvidias site, I have the current drivers. I tried to look up my nforce drivers but the site didn't list my type. And for the life of me now that I am at work I can't remember what it is.

Well I think I may have figured it out, at least I hope. I ran chkdsk and had a few errors which it fixed and after it re booted said my drive was clean. So far no lag issues.
