Using account recovery on an account that you sold

Recently, I found out that a longtime in-game friend of mine used account recovery on their account, which they had sold. Apparently, this practice is not uncommon.

Is this a widespread phenomenon? IMHO, this is pretty much the single lowest thing that a person can do in this game.

    Worse than ninjalot.
    Worse than botting.
Worse than Mastercarding yourself a Ghorn.
Worse than stealing an LS bank.
Worse than hacking someone else's account.

I'm talking complete and utter moral bankruptcy. I can't think of anything worse that one could do in this game.

Is my opinion extreme? Do others casually accept this practice these days?

I know there will always be an element of "serves you right for buying an account," but seriously, is this where we're at? This is the kind of sh*t that deserves to be prosecuted IRL, in my opinion.

People who buy accounts and then get it jacked from them really have no pity from me.

That's why you buy through paypal, so you can chargeback their ass.

I know this is going to be a common response, but do you not have a problem with the it's-OK-if-you're-already-elite double standard, where those who sell gil/accounts are savvy entrepreneurs but those who buy gil/accounts are pathetic losers to be mocked and shunned? They're both equally RMT.

It happens very commonly, and most people who are smart and sell accounts using paypal, are smart enough to bill the person "Intangible item" and if the other person does try to chargeback, it doesn't matter because its an intangible item.

This doesn't work, unless you doctor up some fake invoice/receipt Paypal and your credit card company will side with the other person claiming that it was a virtual item. The safest thing to do is to try and login to paypal from some type of proxy IP and make the payment that way, then you can claim that you never actually made that payment and instantly get refunded (this is also illegal e.g. fraud).

Majority of ffxi players sell their accounts when they wan to "retire". There is a market for this & avenue to buy/sell is plentiful. Although it is deem illegal, SE does not do anything to curb the market. So for us players, who cares?

If you decide to buy an account, you should hv factored in the risk that the account may get recall by rogue scammer. RMT websites already taken care of this by naming the scammers RL name, address etc for buyers to beware of these scum, no need to have a topic at BG.

and this has been going on forever lol. dont know why this thread exists but, i gotta admit. i didnt know about the chargeback override process from paypal lol. i know a guy who sold his account for 2 grand with no relic in 06, but when he recalled in 07, he was perfectly fine lol. im guessing there's no way to get the original seller of the account fucked, huh? i thought that Futchy guy from Asura had some phone calls from some lawyers <_>.

This is why you don't buy accounts in the first place~

At any rate, the seller could just make a dummy paypal account, get money, delete account, recall character, ???, profit.

    Flawed system is flawed.

    This ^^

I've been against RMT and botting etc. since I started playing. I can kind of see the "sense" of someone who is quitting totally and invested so much time in the game selling a good account and checking out of FFXI for good. But to me it's still immoral. I'd much rather give my account to someone who is staying, but then again I don't have millions of gil and a relic etc.

You sell an account you're RMT. You buy an account you're RMT. RMT screwing RMT.... who gives a fuck? Seriously???

I can see the OP's viewpoint but it doesn't hold much water with me.

why are people so uptight about rmt again? I see a lot of mouth-frothing up in here despite the fact it's 2010 and the game is deader than it ever was

on topic though, the actions taken described in the OP are nothing short of theft

this is not "honor amongst thieves" type situation though, because these buyers and sellers are entering into a mutually understood agreement for a set price

these are not the black market organs that some would take them to be

Regardless of it's place on the moral scale regarding game actions, I think it speaks volumes about a persons character, and as such, I agree with your OP. Your friend just screwed someone out of X amount of money, and were it for something material, said friend would be being prosecuted right now.
