BG Medical: Sinusitis

Hello fellow BGers,

It's that time again: I want to hear your experiences! Before I post my story, please know that I have not gone to the doctor yet, and I don't plan on either...just because I already know what I have and I refuse to take meds.

So, about 2 months ago it started getting really cold where I live and on some drunk night I caught a cold...usually it takes me like a week or so (at work) to get over it without medication or anything and I'm good to go again. But this time I kept getting sick every single time I had almost recovered, mainly because I was still going out even though the weather got shittier.

I don't have a runny nose or anything, just an aching throat and my right ear seems clogged (kind of like an otitis)...but last Sunday I blew my nose and I witnessed the utter most amazing thing ever: I had created an almost exact replica of my nasal cavities...and it was still in one piece. Ever since I had the same thing happen to me every day.

I find it quite amusing, so I naturally took pics of my creations.

For the ear mix some water and vinegar and pour it in your ear while your taking a shower, should clear up. As for the nose, try mucinex or something similar to get rid of the boogers. You do need antibiotics but sense you don't want to go to the doctor you're just going to have to wait it out and take over the counter meds.

Yeah, it's essentially free health care but I simply refuse to take antibiotics. I haven't been to a doc in 2 years except when I thought my appendix was bursting (which turned out to be a hernia) and even after surgery I only took the meds for like 5 days.

I'm sure I'll get over it soonish, just wanted to hear your advice.

PS: the color might be because I'm a smoker.

Go to a fucking doctor man and get some penicilin. If you don't you run the risk of this spreading down into your lungs and causing bronchitis or pneumonia.

Is it bad that I chuckled at this doctor. I don't have the guts to click the pictures. But based on the above posters, go see a damn doctor. He might not even give u antibiotics.

I'll wait til the end of next week, since I have shit to do at work...but after that I might just give in and go say hi. Still not very inclined towards antibiotics, maybe something homeopathic.

PS: you might look at me weirdly but I got my view from on doctors by this man.

Okay I only glanced at the first picture before because I was at work, but good god go to the doctor. That is not a normal sinus infection IMO. I had an awful sinus infection my senior year of high school that lasted over 4 months, they even did a CT scan I was so damn sick...and I still never had shit like that. I would be concerned about the infection spreading at this point. At least get a doctor's opinion.

That's the whole "problem"...I don't feel sick or anything, no pain, nothing...but yeah, since like literally everyone freaked out I will go see a doctor in like a week. I'm not really too concerned to be honest...I've had issues with umm mucus (I guess that's the word) build up ever since I was little. Like in my lungs (asthmatic) and also nose. Plus my nose has probably been broken a few times, or at least close to broken. So that might cause some of that too...

The only thing that kind of annoys me is the ear part, but nothing to write home about.

PS: Pirian, I don't have children nor do I plan on having any, luckily I guess

Edit: might also be regrowing polyps...had those taken out as a child, but I kinda doubt that.

Kind of a doctor here. Not the quack kind either.

True, some sinusitis can be self limiting. If you absolutely dislike doctors, I suggest some nasal steroids like nasonex, flonase or equivalent, two sprays per nostril twice a day, to decrease the inflammation. Also, nasal saline sprays to try getting rid of the gunk, like netipot, on an as needed basis.

Nasal decongestants like otrivin I would use cautiously. It helps unblock the swelling and let the pus in your sinus drain, but use it for at most 3 days because anymore and you'll get rebound sinus congestion, which just worsens everything.

Some of the complications from sinusitis (often confined in the maxillary sinus) include it spreading to other, more dangerous sinuses in the head e.g. frontal, or sphenoid; they're all connected after all. Frontal sinusitis can lead to meningitis or brain abscess. Sphenoid sinusitis can cause cavernous sinus thrombosis. None of those are good news.

Ear infections, which it sounds like you have, also associated with sinusitis, can rarely lead to mastoiditis, which again is trouble.

If you tried the OTC therapy I suggested and it gets better, good. If you get worse despite the nasal sprays e.g. increase sinus pain, fever not going away, I strongly recommend you go see a doctor for antibiotics.
