It might not seem like a big deal, but I use my phone a lot especially at the office. My iphone is jailbroken with a tethering AP which turns my phone into a wifi hotspot so I can browse the web on my laptop. Looking at my last bill, I used about 1.9 GB (before I started tethering) and God knows how much it data I have used after putting the app.
There is some good news though, which is you can stay on the current unlimited plan, but if you want to use Apple/AT&T approved tethering, you have to go with their DataPro plan for $25 with their 2gb cap, and also pay an extra $20 for tethering. If you are jailbroken (there's already a jailbreak for 4G ready to go) you can just stay on the current unlimited plan and use the tether hack/app.
