The forums aren't looking so bad right now, I'm actually surprised at the number of posts/threads already. They also did a good job with organizing everything for the dev team.
But yea, it's probably a bit civil because they can actually ban your character if you troll.
Lacks some of the basics I've gotten to like but they have a month or so to implement them. The discussion is surprisingly civil so far indeed, although there was just too much shit going on to keep track of at first.
It seems some community reps can speak both JP and EN so that should make communicating and translating easier for them. Not that I expect perfect balance between JP and EN boards though.
Was posting on there last night. Liked what I saw - just gotta stay away from General or your brain will melt.
Will have to check this out when I get a minute today. Gonna need more coffee. I hope folks can keep the discussions constructive.
Nice layout at least, seems ok so far.
Edit: Hate that you can't have a customizable avatar...it's either nothing or generic 14 race icons, ugh.
If you give a million people voices, 999,000 will use their new voices to prove conclusively that they are idiots.
The amount of brain-melting stupidity from the community is downright frightening.
They really should've waited on opening up forums until after more of their changes had been implemented, because there's just a torrent of stupid pretty much everywhere (but especially in general), especially stupid suggestions on things that don't need to be changed or implemented.
Yeah dude its pretty bad.
I accidently posted there cause I was looking at recent threads and didn't know what folder it was in. Thought it was one of the dev-made threads for on-top discussions but no. ;/
Edit: Anyone know what is allowed on signatures there? Can't get HTML tags to work and BB code is restricted.
Omg using this Dev Tracker like I'm scanning for NMs with Widescan. I SEE THEM POSTING ON JP FORUMS SOMEONE GOOOOOO!
logged in from my phone, ffxiv account got locked due to susp. activity. Fail SE.
^So you tried logging into the official forum and they locked your account to the game?
Yes, you have to login with your official SE account. I logged into the forums with my phone this morning, everything was fine. Tried logging into the game, locked account. Have to reset the pw or something to get it reactivated... just a mild hassle, but now I know not to login to the forums with a different IP.
The japanese section has a thread with over 17,000 views about the copy-pasted maps.

I don't know what I hate more. Idiots on a forum, or people bitching about how everybody is an idiot on a forum whilst on a forum.
People bitching about people bitching about how everybody is an idiot on a forum whilst on a forum whilst on a forum?
It's not about the copypasta, it's about leveling up and staying the same zone/scenery for the entire game and simply moving to a different location. And it's perfectly valid imo, shit sucks. Mor Dhona is just plain awesome and even Coerthas has a unique feel, and they may as well not even be there.
I feel we need to embrace this addition and look at the opportunity we have been given. This is the closest we have ever gotten to the "dev team" and we need to take advantage. Also, this is a big leap forward for SE in general. They are learning, albeit slowly, that this is what mmo companies do to appease their masses. Let's do our best with this privilege and do what we need to do on our end to get this game where it ought to be.
Hey, I'm giving .1% of the posters on the official forum the benefit of the doubt.
And ordinarily, I'd be with you, but keeping in mind this is SE's official forum, so theoretically the community team could sample the responses there and hand them back to the developers as "what the players want". Feedback to some extent is a good idea, but the signal-to-noise ratio is going to make getting the good ideas sorted from the tremendously bad very hard.
If FFXIV wants a hope of being successful, and whether anyone wants to play it or not, nothing BAD can come from FFXIV being successful, the last thing it needs to be doing is listening to a ton of half-baked ideas.
I'm genuinely worried that a lot of the terrible ideas that are being proposed repeatedly will actually be listened to or incorporated. For example: pet jobs... SE can't write pet AI worth a shit, and balancing pet classes (where the pet really matters) is always a nightmare. Other major topics of worry include how many people are complaining about chocobos & airships (rather than things that really need priority), and how many people want FFXIV to be changed into a prettier version of FFXI.
I hope they add chocobos & airships someday. I hope they never, ever implement pet classes unless they learn to do it properly (and I highly doubt they can). And few things could be worse for FFXIV than remaking FFXI, rather than learning from what worked and what didn't, and incorporating those lessons into a modern MMO rather than a throw-back to the old school style (which FFXIV already has a healthy helping of).
Edit: I do think forums are a good idea, but only once the game is in a more solid state. Any pay-to-play MMO should have an official forum and a way of getting feedback to the community team and developers. FFXIV still has too much fundamental change in the coming months to have the forums be useful yet. Too high a percentage of the threads will focus around "helpful suggestions" of what SE needs to add right away. The player polls and producer letters show that Yoshi-P has a pretty clear picture of what needs to be done to get FFXIV to a point where it will have legs and a chance of ongoing success. In 6 months, the game will (hopefully) be solid enough that more of the "helpful suggestions" will actually be useful feedback, and help guide the direction of the game, rather than a lot of the nearly-blank-slate brainstorming that's going on now.

The "spring" patch that's been referenced in several interviews by Yoshi P. should be an interesting change.
