Question for 2004-era NINs

So over in the XIV section, there's a thread discussing the utility of gearswapping, and a large chunk of it has been whether gearswapping was useful in (75-era) XI.

During my XI days, my LS didn't fight kings (no bots, no drama), but someone is claiming that in 2004, he solo tanked Fafhogg on NIN/WAR with "hauby, sniper rings, etc." (i.e. full DD gear) with no gear swapping whatsoever.

To those who were around at the time, where does that statement rank?

1) bullshit; impossible
2) incredibly godlike accomplishment that would require POIDH
3) maybe possible with an awesome party (alliance?) behind you
4) pretty plausible if you were good
5) routine scrub work

As I said, I didn't fight kings so I have no way to really evaluate it.

oops, I missed the "tanked" part. I thought that just said solo. Regardless, back in 2004, pld's were still relying on AA rotations and shit, so I doubt they solo tanked. They probably lowman HELD it until people arrived.

Well, someone else sent me a PM asking if this kind of thread should be made. I said no, because it doesn't have anything to do with current content, and I don't believe it's going to develop into anything more than a chorus of "no u" posts.

I guess with a decent number of whm anything could of been done, my sam tanked a few fafs in his day when I could go gung hoe because of 4 whms back him up lol.

Honestly, I never really used any gear swapping on PLD/NIN really back in the 75 era and I main tanked and solo tanked everything easily... I don't think it was necessary then unless you were fighting time intensive NMs and needed to optimize. Most of our fights were low manned so it wasn't about capping hate as fast as possible, but moreso just not getting floored. I even did our 12-man Jorm in 2006 with no gear swaps except for a couple small ones here and there (I would usually gear swap Shield gear on for Ichi recast but that was it.).

Considering my Abyssea geared 99 THF/NIN can barely solo it without trouble and it's better than a 75 NIN in every way, I'd rank it impossible. Absolute Terror back to back can make short work of you, even with capped evasion, if that doesn't the wing damage will.

I gear swapped all the time. If you didn't, you were a lazy/shitty player. A nin/war even with gear swapping would have had a difficult time holding hate from the blm's. Maybe a nin/brd before they patched it. You'd need a good support system as well. I'm calling BS.

Of course he had good support, because like someone pointed out, you could be terrored for 20-30 seconds and would just soak up damage like a sponge during that time, but there also wasn't any significant amount of PDT to swap in back then and defense/VIT didn't do shit anyway.

Go find a level 75, level sync and try it. It's not that hard.

Even if you limited yourself to RoZ-and-earlier gear, wouldn't merits still apply while synced to 75? And there's been a lot of other changes. I don't think doing it today would tell you much.

As Okan already pointed out for me in the thread you're referencing where he said he had been a part of NIN/WAR solo tanking faf before as well, obviously there was a good support crew. SMN to back up with AA if I caught got with my pants down, well timed flashes from a WHM, full haste buffs, etc.

If you were solo tanking fafhogg /war you wouldn't have been holding hate over any DDs at all, so it either would have raged or they would have pulled off of you

The only way for a NIN tank to hold hate off of BLMs and the SCing DDs on fafhogg is the old /drk or /brd setup with enmity gear, Arhat's etc

Rage didn't even exist back then, lol. Besides, most groups usually killed it in 15-20 minutes using SC+MB.

Merits existed in 2004; Combat/Magic/Other introduced in Sept 2004; Job-specific Feb 2005; Job Cat2 was July 2006 and there was a cap up in there too.

I wasnt entirely sure, I couldnt find the source of that, and I didnt want to go through every patch notes. Didnt think it was that soon though, NA got the game in Halloween 2003?
