Grats on getting your degree. I'd say house first only cause in the bay area, every time I turn around, the cost of a house jumps 50-100k.

Still waiting on a grade for Rings and Fields, but got:

    Fourier/Harmonic Analysis A+
    Differential Calculus on Manifolds A-
    Topics in Group Theory A+
    Measure and Integration Theory A
Some dumb computer science courses A/A+

Dropped a course in Quantum Computing lol.

Jealous of this schedule. Looks like a lot of fun.

Just finished my last final, which was singlehandedly the worst test I've taken in my entire life. Was a final for grad level Quantum Mechanics II and genuinely, the real winners are the people who didn't study at all because the differences in grades is gonna be like 20 points max.

To properly do that exam I would've needed my functional analysis textbook, any number of my PDE textbooks, 2 more hours, and about another 2-3 sentences written per problem to actually finish asking a question for me to answer.

Here's to the curve. Most important lesson I'm learning in grad school is that working hard is for chumps.

Still 5 weeks left for the semester here ㅠㅠ I've got a pretty easy schedule, so grades should be good. Semantics, Syntax, Language Acquisition Theory, Practice in Language 1 & 3 (translation classes), History of Busan, and Society in Film and Lit., which turned out to be a class about Shakespearean tragedies for some reason. Already got an internship lined up at the Korean Language Research Center here for the summer working on machine translation, so can't wait for that to start.

I won't be getting any grades back until mid to late June but congrats to everyone on their A's.

I'm curious how some of you guys do these packed semesters and manage your time though. I work full time and get zero aid even though I make shit. Next semester will be my first tough semester and I'm a little nervous how I'm gonna manage.

Anyway, congrats again to all the good grades.

It really is. That course on differential calculus I mentioned was extra to my degree and I only took it as a personal challenge. All 2 of the other people in the class were top students and there for the same reasons, so the proff (who had a reputation for pushing really hard in normal circumstances) decided to cover Spivak's Calculus on Manifolds cover to cover and grind us into dust. Somehow he convinced me to write the final despite the fact that I had no reason to do so, and he gave us a lovely take home final assignment during final's season (along with an additional final exam) which contained this question among others, which I've culled most of the symbolfuck out of for readability:

Let M be a k-dimensional manifold in R^n, and phi a smooth test function whose support contains the image of some coordinate system f:W->M. Prove that there is a smooth k-form omega on M such that omega vanishes at x in M if and only if phi does, and omega(x) is an orientation preserving volume element on the tangent space at any such point x. Use this result along with a suitable partition of unity to show that any orientable k-dimensional manifold M admits a smooth k-form which vanishes nowhere on M.

The result of this was an A- I didn't really want or need, and a C+ (the only time I've scored below A- in 3 years) in a course I did whose final came the day this miserable piece of shit was due. Been kicking myself for not dropping ever since.

Man every time I've had 3-4 person classes it's always been great. Ends up being "well fuck a syllabus, what are you here to learn? I'll teach it to you." Always been a great experience for me and is one of the main reasons why I have such a deeper background than my classmates in grad school. I know more about quantum information theory than people in their second year of working in the field.

That sucks balls. I was reading that question and just thinking to myself how shitty it would be to actually be forced to think about how to solve it. Some ideas about different parts of the problem came pretty quickly then once I started to think about not only piecing them together, but doing a RIGOROUS proof I started to feel extremely bad for you.

    Shit sucks man.

questions like that make me glad I'm an English major. the worst I had to deal with in grad school is stuff like "explain Frankenstein using Lacanian theory of self formation through the mirror stage of development or Freudian psychoanalysis of the uncanny.

also, finished my masters in lit, graduation next Monday, already have an adjunct professor gig while wondering what to do next

btw being a college professor is fucking hilarious
