    JoL and Drg

    Evening all,

Have some questions for Drgs on JoL. I searched the forums for love halberd and JoL but that just led me to that failed gungnir findings thread.

I've fought Jol twice before as Drg (love torque dropped for me first kill :D , really fun melee experience. Will be fighting him again soon and I'd like to maximize my dd against it.

Sushi or Red Curry (I assume curry).

Triton's or Love Halberd (maybe crit3% grip instead of pole strap with the halberd?).

    /war or /sam (assuming /war)

sidenote, on JoJ other day was getting Angon has no effect messages... think that was something to do with his defense up moves or that rng using acid bolts (which I suspect is the case).

    thanks for the help.

    Re: JoL and Drg

I haven't fought JoL as Drg, so I'm not sure how evasive it is. So I can't really comment on the food, although I assume meat would be fine.

As for which polearm, it depends on how your LS fights it.

If you plan on spamming Penta, then use Triton's due to the higher base dmg.
If you're skill chaining and/or spamming Wheeling, then I'd go with Love Halberd. I'd carry both though just in case plans change.

I personally prefer using Pole Strap full time since extra attacks just seem better overall compared to a slightly higher crit rate. Plus it factors into WSes, whereas I don't think Crit does unless the WS has a critical hit chance (I don't recall seeing anything definite about it at least).

    For Sub:

Both are good. /War would be best for Penta spam though due to the higher attack and attack boosts. For Wheeling I like /Sam more for Hasso and Meditate.

    Hope that helps.

I haven't fought as drg, but as drk, I use drk/war and spinning slash with meat, JoL isn't /that/ evasive but it's defense is insane and with sushi you get too many hits for 0 (esp with no brd like us), so my advice would be go /war and use WT, the best thing to do is take all you can with you weapon/grip wise and just test yourself, it's not like its a short fight lol

I'm not a DRG but you shouldn't have any accuracy issues as 2h weapon user with meat. Depending on how good your tanks are and how much damage you do (again, I'm neither a DRG nor have I ever seen one fight JoL), you probably want to sub SAM in case you rip hate and don't get one-shotted by the first hit.

I get huge accuracy issues as thief against JOL depending on his mode. Some modes are more defense based while others are more evasion based :\

I hadn't really noticed that, but then again I usually just engage and go AFK because it is so boring (ok not quite but I'm not actually paying attention)

    Re: JoL and Drg

    Thanks for the responses.

Just to go over some of your thoughts (and maybe people can add on):

If you plan on spamming Penta, then use Triton's due to the higher base dmg.
If you're skill chaining and/or spamming Wheeling, then I'd go with Love Halberd.
Definitely going to use Wheeling, my results with penta on HNM are less than impressive, maybe 1/5 outdamage a WT. Won't be skillchaining, melee burning him with blms on spawns.

I personally prefer using Pole Strap full time since extra attacks just seem better overall compared to a slightly higher crit rate.
I'm the same way, but what I was thinking was: if using halberd, then I'll be attacking a whole lot more and +3% crit might significantly up per hit damage. WT doesnt have a crit mod, but I think maybe 2% da on the ws wont be as much a factor as making every hit with the lower damage halberd as good as possible (also critting past some of its deefense (if that makes sense). Anyone have any thoughts on this?

For Wheeling I like /Sam more for Hasso and Meditate.
Can anyone elaborate on this? I'm thinking zerk from /war will help out more but I'd to hear more on if/why /sam might be better.

you probably want to sub SAM in case you rip hate and don't get one-shotted by the first hit.
I won't rip hate I hope with SJ and HJ. Definitely dont want to rip hate at all on JoL and hurt ally from aoe. A primary rule for melee on JoL I think.

I get huge accuracy issues as thief against JOL depending on his mode. Some modes are more defense based while others are more evasion based :\
Slott could you elaborate on this more? What are his "modes"? I'll look around see if I can find anything about that.

Also, could someone point me to a parser perhaps that isnt invasive on your computer and is relatively user friendly so I could test/post some results? I guess I'd like one that can parse wyrven damage as well.

    Thanks~

Might I suggest Skewer? It's basicly Blade: Jin with a 90+ DMG weapon right? I mean, a threefold WS with a chance to crit would be my choice on anything that had higher DEF when the other options are Penta Thrust and Wheeling Thrust.

Meh my LS doesn't melee JoL we kill it primarily with magic, summoners ,ranged attacks and SAMs.

I never meleed JoL, I typically keep an evasion NIN alive while he tanks both Ru'Phuabos with Healing Breath and full wyver HP gear, for 446.

Good idea, definitely will try it.

Granted 2% doesn't seem like much, but when combined with other items that Enchance DA, it's rather nice. I guess it also depends on JoL's defense since the extra hits won't matter if you hit for 0.

    Why I like it:

Hasso grants +10 Accuracy and +10% haste for melee attacks. +STR is dependent on the level of the Samurai, up to a maximum of +10. +STR is as follows: (+5 Str for 37 Sam sub)
And Meditate of course for free TP to WS sooner.

Also, if you use Spirit Surge, that extra haste from Hasso is nice with Love Halberd. Video

IMO JOL has several modes that you'll notice while meleeing him. Modes where you do a shitload more damage than normal (see sig, the guy who broke 4k etc) and other times, my TA mercy strokes with boost can't even break 600 damage (and yes they stack right) - without boost, a ta mercy does 250...again depending on his mode. That same TA Mercy stroke without boost has done 1042 for me, later on in that fight, same buffs food etc. I don't know how his atk and evasion fluctuate or why, however they definitely do.

Not being a melee on JoL, is it possible it depends on his current element?

Wonder if his attack varies by element as well.
That's kinda interesting, no one in my shell had ever noticed it.
We usually had 2-3 DRKs for our main source of damage though.

    Re: JoL and Drg

I don't think so rocl, because the phase seems to last a lot longer than just an element swap. (Perhaps it depends on pets dead or if a proper skillchain was done though)

    Re: JoL and Drg

Well you know his boosts stack just like a mnk does right? Its possible in that sig of yours he had many boosts stacked on him that you stole instead of just one or two?
