Gamestop Midnight Brawl Launch "Biggest Tournament Ever"

    http://www.gamestop.com/gs/ssbb/tournam ... %5Ftest=1&

Round One on Midnight at Launch, with District, Regional, and Grand Finals (in San Jose, California) in the following weeks. LOTS of stores are on the Participating List, and it might be fun (especially after seeing those Youtube "finals"). No word on control scheme or other rules, although I doubt any of the unlockable characters/stages will be available. You could probably ask your local store since I wouldn't be surprised if every one did stuff a bit different.

It doesn't say what the local prize is, but I'm assuming you'd at least get a copy of Brawl out of it.

Hmmm, my first time playing Brawl might be in a tournament, that doesn't sound good...

Re: Gamestop Midnight Brawl Launch "Biggest Tournament Ever"

What's worse is that the place I reserved brawl isn't holding a tournament.

I'm thinking about going with Diddy Kong... Dedede and Wario would be my alternate choices, but I'm thinking I might be better off playing a Melee character for the sake of being familiar with moves.

Did they make Short Jumping easier in this game? I heard they did.

My friends have been talking about this past few days, and these posts make me wonder, especially about the controller..

Would suck if they made you use wiimote, maybe I should practice using that instead <_<

Probably allow you to use the classic controller...Can't see them allowing wavebirds...time to switch to CC and get some practice.

After a full night of classic controller practice I still can't reverse arial with any damn consistency, and jesus it's too easy to inadvertantly hold the thing off tilt and start using the wrong B moves. That said I'm getting used to it, by march 8th I should be able to play with CC just as good as a wavebird. In reality the wiimote is better and more intuitive than classic is <_>

Re: Gamestop Midnight Brawl Launch "Biggest Tournament Ever"

I was gonna be mean and not say anything, but since I'm nice (and I don't think any of you live near me...) the official rules are now up and:

The "standard" format is DEFINITELY going to be Nunchuk + Wiimote, unless your GS says otherwise I'd get to practicing that form. The rules state very clearly that
A Contestant cannot use his or her own Game Controllers,
and Wavebirds are quite rare these days, so...

This I am not sure about, but it *sounds* like the GS is allowed to cut off the amount of people allowed in at 32, since the rules say 4 rounds. I'm not sure if they are allowed to have more, but most GSs aren't very big. No word on signups or if you just have to be there first that night, although from the official rules it *sounds* like they are doing sign-ups.

There is no "standard" stage (not 100% on this either) , it will be 1vs1, items on, one minute timer. If players cannot agree on a stage they will have to pick the "random" one or leave it to store employee discretion. I would suggest playing a character that can realistically KO an opponent in that amount of time, or there will be a lot of sudden death matches. Lots of bombs also drop from the sky in Brawl if the Sudden Death match lasts very long (more than 10 secs or so) so beware...

So it would seem that Ike would be the obvious choice if you want to win. How will Dedede fair under these rules? Or Diddy? Dedede sounds similar to Ike in the respect of being a heavy(hard to knock out / strong attacks).

Re: Gamestop Midnight Brawl Launch "Biggest Tournament Ever"

I would be very wary of DeDeDe. My friends on other forums claim him to be powerful, but also VERY awkward without practice. Ike I'm not so sure about, I've heard he's quite slow in a 1v1 type fight but also have heard he's quite good.

I'm more worried about two things: begginer-friendliness in the character (unless they get a demo early to practice on), and finishing attacks. Not to brag any more than necessary, but Pokemon Trainer has all those bases covered just fine, especially if I start with Ivysaur. He has a more powerful FAir than Peach, ranged attacks, combo moves, and an Upsmash that can KO most fighters at ~60%. Plus I can quickly switch to Charizard for his power moves, extra jumps, weight, and better recovery.

Of course, all that goes out the door if I actually get a chance to practice before hand, but I'm not counting on that. I'm also wondering if they'l let you switch characters during the matches or if you have to stick with the same one the whole night. I'm hoping they can answer the rest of those questions by next weekend. I'll be at my GS at opening to signup if i can, but I don't get off work til 9 that night...I am fully expecting a line by then.

If you only have 60 seconds to make it good, ike is probably one of the best options that exist for that.

gamestop never gives out a free copy of the game for winners, unless the manager or district manager pays for it out of pocket. it's normally just a tshirt or something of the sort for the local winner.

also, looked at the places hosting and looks like my store is on the list. That's really odd since my store isn't even doing a midnight launch. <_<

Is he newb friendly? I know it doesn't mean very much but back at Gamer's Day last year most people I saw had a hard time with him.

I'm actually thinking I might start with Charizard, go for a kill with Flamethrower buildup/Rocksmash, then switch to Squirtle and speed away til the timer is up.

The only thing that I'd say is rough with Ike for noobs is getting him back onto the level. Even when used to him, the lag on his attacks and weight make a mistake constantly fatal. Still, I agree that he'd be the clear choice for a 1 minute match.

We got a free copy of the Pokemon Colliseum game from the tournament they had.

Also, can someone tell me how the controls work for the nunchuk+wiimote combination? I haven't seen anything about what does what.

Also, the Gamestop I signed up at had a little sign with a place to put names.

that wasnt paid for by gamestop, means the district manager or store manager wanted people to come in and paid for it out of pocket.

I doubt our manager paid for it, might have been the DM then, but honestly, it only got 4 people to show up and we were all together.
