According to some leaked paper work from Japan -- the land of robots and advanced video game systems -- Sony is phasing the 80GB PS3 out really soon. The leaked retail memo requested that promotional materials for the 80GB model to be taken down, and that all final orders for 80GB models must be placed before August 9th.
Now why would Sony kill the 80GB PS3?
To replace it with the rumored PS3 Slim, it seems.
The new slimmer model is expected to have an 80GB HD. Last week, a listing for the Slim appeared (than vanished fairly quickly) on Germany's Amazon website. And back in May, pictures of the box surfaced online, and some sites posting those images have been served with Cease and Desist notices -- which are always a dead give-away that the images are actually worth mentioning, and not just fakes.
While tons of gaming fans have been looking for a price cut on the PS3, it seems that a wave of them are just about to crest. $50 USD has fallen from the price tag of an Amazon PS3 bundle, and website RTLinfo reports that retailers have told to expect a whopping 100 euro price soon, and that the new Sony Slim will be announced at the gamescon games Expo in Colonge, Germany, on August 18th.
