    Thanksgiving

mmm my favorite holiday (possibly behind Halloween... they serve entirely different purposes). I'm a whore for Thanksgiving food. for the first time, I'm making green bean casserole, but that's so simple I figure I can't screw it up.

what about BG... what foods do you love for Thanksgiving? what traditions do you have?

besides the casserole, I love rutabagas. even better than mashed potatoes. and I only get them once a year since they're tough/time-consuming to prepare. once you finally soften them up, though, mashed with milk and butter... oh god.

turkey, on the other hand, is overrated. I don't hate it, but it's not that great. I'd be just fine with a roast or something. although it does go well with cranberries.

    and for great justice:

My Thanksgiving tradition is dreading having to spend any time with my family. And being bored to death because most places are closed. There is no escape. As far as food the usual.

We do pretty standard things, but a lot of them. My favorites of what we do:

Huge turkey, stuffed, and all the giblets and what not are used to make the gravy.
    Baked mac n cheese.
The yams with the fucking marshmallows baked on them, holy fuck.
Sometimes we'll do either Smashed or Mashed potatoes, I think this year roasted red potatoes will be on the table as well.
Usually we do a 2nd dinner item besides the turkey, sometimes a honey glazed ham, sometimes a roast, I think fish may be on the table as well.

Tons of other crap, even though it's not that many of us, since we outcast most of our family except for our group of tight knit family.

Looking forward to seeing other idea from this thread though. We just had stuffed peppers last night for dinner, so sadly, those wont be involved on the table.

Minimum 3 pumpkin pies as well, along with at least 1 apple and 1 cherry.

Fuck im hungry. Food network yesterday showed me a Pumpkin Banana Merang pie.. wow.

Standard Thanksgiving stuff, although I do make some pretty damn good potatos. I can't stand the box kind people settle with. It's very disappointing. This year is gonna be the year of like 3-4 Thanksgivings for me. Family, dad's family, and 1-2 Friendsgivings.

    We're an appetizers family.

There's the aunt who brings the spinach dip in the bread bowl, the aunt who brings the sausage on toothpicks with assorted mustards. Somehow shrimp cocktails end up on the table too. There's also the cousin who brings her 7-layer dip, and the family basically fills up on appetizers before we ever cut the turkey. Every Thanksgiving, we have pretty much the same dishes prepared by the same people with the same recipes from the dawn of time. As each cousin reaches adulthood and starts a family, a new dish enters the scene.

Before my wife and I, it was my cousin's 7-layer dip. My wife now makes a Chocolate pie for dessert, and we have two new married couples this year, so I look forward to the new food additions.

In this instance, lore almost intersects with science. Turkey does contain tryptophan, an amino acid which is a natural sedative. But tryptophan doesn't act on the brain unless it is taken on an empty stomach with no protein present, and the amount gobbled even during a holiday feast is generally too small to have an appreciable effect.

Turkey is sooo fucking overrated. I mean on Thanksgiving it's usually pretty okay and delicious after adding a bunch of great things to it, but throughout the rest of the year it's pretty horrible by meat standards.

fuck boxed potatoes, they're fine for a night at home but Thanksgiving? no way. semi-chunky mashed with butter and milk is the only way to go.

and I'm disappointed that there haven't been any other rutabaga lovers yet... I swear I dream about those damn things.

Ill take a heavenly ham over turkey anyday, thankfully most of the family agrees and we get some type of honeyglazed ham for thanksgiving and christmas.

Only thing I have ever hated about this great holiday and my favorite holiday is eating at any serious GF I may have during this time (and akwardly spending time with their family in the first place), their food is NEVER even close to my family's cooking and Im sure they may feel the same way when they have to eat at my fam's.

Strawberry Rhubarb pie. The only time of year I can find it here is around Thanksgiving.
