    firefox - multiple windows

I always run 2 windows of firefox open, 1 window is for my partner stats pages where i have to monitor dozens of ad campaigns daily, usually have 10+ tabs open incl my personal favs like bg joystiq and engadget.

the 2nd window is used for admin pages for the company i consult for, this window is used for campaign creation, back end monitoring and XML feed testing, usually 7+ tabs.

the issue: i rarely ever turn off my computer because i hate having to close these 2 windows because each of the tabs requires an authentic login.

so on the times where i was forced to reboot i would have to close these windows and when i was back in windows i would only be able to reload the previous tabs of ONE of those windows. its a PITA because of all the logins and different URL's that need to be checked daily.

HOWEVER, windows update forced my computer to reboot overnight like usual and when i came down and logged in and said "fuck now i have to login to all my url's again" i opened up one copy of firefox and BOOM both windows spawned with all of my tabs.

the question: does anyone know how i can recreate what windows update allowed to happen?

TLDR: how do i save firefox tabs from 2 windows and have those same 2 windows open with all the tabs after i have shut down and rebooted.

Go into preferences/options (depending on platform), and in the Main section, over the Home Page thing, there's a pull-down that you can set to "show my windows and tabs from last time". That may do the trick.

Go to: Tools -> Options -> Tabs -> Click "Tab Mix Plus Options" -> Under "Tab Context Menu" check the box for "Merge Windows". Then go to "Main Context Menu" and check the box for "Merge Windows" again. -> Click "Ok"

This allows you to merge your windows by right clicking and then selecting "Merge Windows" on any tab. Do this before closing firefox. Then quit "save" and you can restart and have all the same windows. If you want to move them to another window just check the box for "Move to New Window" in the same place where you checked "Merge Windows".

    Hope this helps.

Well why use firefox if you are only using trusted sites in one of the tabs? If you don't use one window for anything but work you shouldn't have to worry about getting anything bad yea? Use chrome for your trusted stuff, Firefox for all your other surfing. This is what i do mainly because of the reasons you stated and i like my tabs saved when i need to reboot for whatever reason.

Firefox profiles are your solution. Two separate profiles means two separate tracks of closed tabs.

Sorry, re-read OP and noticed you wanted to redo what Firefox does when it crashes. Here's how to do it: Tools -> Options -> Tab Mix Plus Options -> Session -> Click the drop down menu for "When Browser Starts" -> Select "Show my windows and tabs from last time" -> Click "Ok"

This will no longer prompt you to save anything when you close Firefox. When you restart firefox it should re-open and reload all windows and tabs.

As for a full shutdown I don't know if this is the solution. Only way i guess is to test it. I've just found all of this in the past 10 minutes myself.

problem is everything minus 3 or 4 tabs is for personal stuff, both windows have biz based stuff in them. i keep them in separate windows because one if partner based and one is company based.

how do i setup ff profiles?

@myth - your methods dont work after a reboot, only one window will load all tabs

Sorry that didn't work out. But a google search of "firefox profiles" resulted in this guide from Mozilla for using them.

also when i go to the options for tabs in firefox i dont see anything except 5 checkboxes, there is no "tabs mix plus" option.

is that a plugin or something?

    Yeah it's a firefox add-on.

Here's a link to download with some info: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1122/

myth thanks for the tab mix plus info, i was able to make it work with that after a couple of attempts.

i don't shut down my windows when i do a reboot and when i come back in from the reboot i click the firefox shortcut once and it opens both windows with all my tabs!

    i appreciate it!
