    FFXI on PSVita

Famitsu leak, so not confirmed yet.

This week’s issue of Famitsu makes it official. Final Fantasy XI is currently in the works to be on the PlayStation Vita portable gaming system. Director Hiromichi Tanaka made the announcement, noting that they are assembling staff to work on these projects currently.
    Anyway, WAT

    Dead game?

Well, FFXI's ping/reponse rate does suck enough that it'd be very playable over 3G.....

I can't see this happening without keyboard support though. Seems like it'd be a better plan to instead do a digital release of it for PS3, or rework the game into FFXI-Offline.

Touchscreen keyboard might be feasible, the screen is quite large.

This just doesn't feel right -- but I'm interested to see where it goes.

I'm actually pretty happy to hear about this. PS2 limitations, etc, but it has kept the game at a low enough level that it can play on a handheld which means there may be hope for continued support.

It may also be what seems to be forcing them to take a look at and clean up the basic game mechanics lately, which is also appreciated.

Tanaka said that they're investigating a straight port of Final Fantasy XI to the PlayStation Vita, but there's no solid plan for this at present.

what does the vita use for storage? the game as is takes up like 11GB right now, seems like a tall order for a handheld.

4GB is the standard game card iirc, but goes up to 32gb.

Time to get rid of POL?

I really hope they can pull this off though. Playing FFXI on a handheld would be amazing.

Another reason to get the 3G model... gonna wait on a price drop though unless the launch is just fantastic.

Right, I forgot about the touch screen. Only thing I can think of is that the HUD may feel cramp since it'd need to be ample sized for readable font, so it'd likely be like the PS2 where a good third of the screen is the PT info/buffbar/chatlog.

I'm a bit curious how they'll deal with the data, as the Vita appears to have no onboard storage anymore, and not everyone will plunker down for a 16gb stick of what will be overpriced due to propriety format if the PSP was a sign of things. Hybrid approach perhaps? Core data off game card, game executable w/ update files on mem card, option for full mem.card install if desired.

Really though, this potential of this playable over 3G courtesy of its roots to being dial-up friendly (low-data & high-ping friendly.....at the cost of it running like shit even on modern connections) and overtrusting the client with its actions will be very interesting to see how well it does if the project follows through. Are there any existing MMOs on the market that are portable and do not require a wifi network?
    Spoiler: show
I say potential as we still have no idea to what extent the Vita is able to make use of 3G data.

Unsure if I'd bother with it personally, I'm quite content with my PC/Mac 2box setup here, but being able to do menial stuff like lvl fishing/skills while lying down in bed doesn't sound like a bad idea.

Thats' the PC version. PS2 version data files only use a little over 4 GB on the drive partition. I've got a file dump in the manual update thread. Compressed it comes to under 2 GB. DirectX files are less efficient for file size. PS2 music files are generally under a megabyte each, they're effectively MIDI with an instrument file.

The game reserves an 8 GB partition to have room for update files and future expansions. They didn't properly clean out incomplete updates so the error in January occurred when the partition had less than the expected free space, but once you clear out all those files, the partition has almost 50% free space remaining.

Things like this make me think they're really is a revamp/expansion in the works that they don't want to announce, especially since we're prettymuch just getting holdout updates with tweaks/mini content. Honestly though I really just can't see this happening/being practical without major major changes.

I think it's just another money thing. If it's on the vita it will be a mobile mmo so people will buy vita and buy another "FFXI". Though that's if it happens. I'll drop 300+ dollars to play ffxi on the go :D

    I'll need 3 PSVitas to tri-box!

But on the other hand, I seriously would buy it too and return to the game if I can play it on the move.

This just makes me even more pumped for the console to come out. This is a good move by Square. There's probably little to no work involved into porting it over to the Vita except creating a client, updating some of the UI, and adding controls.

And they'd sell a good amount of units just for FFXI.

I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS MOMENT FOREVER.

This makes me believe that all the gradual UI changes we're getting now are in preparation for this. I'd also expect that if they do formally release XI for the Vita they'd use this huge promotion to usher out another expansion at the same time.

also, if this is true for XI, we can expect some form of HD upgrading and portability for X and XII, imo.
