using your cellphone at work

So I currently work at two jobs, one at a bank another at a tutoring center. I originally just worked at the bank and was shocked when I started to notice the amount of cellphone talking / texting that went on.

And this isn't just from like the tellers. My supervisor, my assistant manager, my manager, all are always going into the backroom to take calls, or texting at their work stations.

At first I figured was just the way the bank is, but then I got my second job at the tutoring center. And many that's where I get irked. My assistant talks CONSTANTLY on the phone to her boyfriend. He calls her like 3 times a day in a 4 hour period, no exaggeration. Yesterday I wanted to yell at her because a kid came up to ask her a question on an assinment, her phone rang and she told the kid to "hold on" so she could answer the phone, which was her boyfriend again.

The owner doesn't do anything about it though 'cause my assistant's sister babysits the owner's son, and they've known each other for a long time. But to me I feel like really, that shouldn't be in the workplace, at least to the extremes both my jobs seem to do it at.

So, how often do you text/call on your phone while at work? Maybe I'm crazy and that it's just become the norm overtime, but it just feels weird.

Depends on who it is calling, I have my phone set to silent when at work. If its from someone who knows I'm at work and is calling anyways chances are its important so I'll take the call.

I work swing (Well kinda swing its odd for stores which is like 10a to 7p since a superior has to be there when your pulling merchandise) so during the hours of 10a to around 3 (Everyone but a few leaves) its pretty uptight get your work done etc etc! But after that not many people are there requests slow to a crawl and carts (inventory) is usually done so its pretty lax!

tl;dr as long as it doesn't hurt your performance at work !

I'm a writing assistant too and I'm the "lead tutor" @ my local college. Before I start a session I let them know to turn their shit off, they already know because it's in the user agreement too. If the phone goes off (which almost never happens eh), we tell them to GTFO. We don't tolerate that type of shit around here.

As far as coworkers, they don't use it or text because we have to set the example for the students.

Especially when they are "Sick" and lay their heads down strategically on top of their cellphone on the desk and put their hand over their mouth. The look on their faces when their phones were snatched was amazing.

Best of all is when they flip the situation around. You the teacher then become either a bitch or a dick (depending on gender) and they go into a state of self victimization and want pity.

Very minimally for me, but I do text/very rarely take calls when I have to work the till at my job, depending on importantance. I do have my phone not set on silent though, so people can hear Snake's Codec cause its sweet

You're real fucking cool. I love that attitude, but I can't exactly accuse you of having it for a particular reason, since there are so many possibilities. Tell me, which is it, what happened that made you a social reject?

God forbid a student doesn't want to sit through the same boring shit day in and day out that they're forced to go to for 13-14 years. College, maybe, but high school isn't exactly a choice. Just because you're a straight edge student that loves to dig their nose in a book doesn't mean that everybody else is that way. Some people don't like to sit through lectures for eight hours a day, did you ever think of that? No no, you have to have it your way, why the fuck do so many authority figures have to exploit their position to give themselves false feelings of power?

Now to top it off we get some self-important bitch who thinks s/he's doing the world a favor by asserting their dominance for fun. Tee-hee, now you don't have your phone for a few days, not like you needed it, huh? I bet you just had a cell phone for no reason at all. Now we're going to play a fun game where I commit a major violation of privacy and start answering your phone calls and then twist it around in my head to think that somehow in the end you'll respect me for it. How about I go through your shit and we'll see how much you like it.

I'm a project manager and have a company cell phone because I am never in the main office. It's kinda the nature of this job to have one glued to your head. I will also carry my personnal phone on me. One thing is for certain though, I keep them on "meeting" setting so I only get a quiet beep and then it vibrates. It gets so annoying working with people who's phones are ringing every 5 seconds.

If someone needs to talk to me they can wait until lunch or when I get off in the evening. Most people know not to call me while I'm at work, although my boss wouldn't do shit about it. I have enough other things to keep me busy throughout the day though, and most of my other co-workers are the same way. If something is a real emergency, I am sure someone will call me on the work phone.

I'll text occasionally if i've got free time, as it only takes 2-3sec. I won't make calls on my cell or take them unless they're emergencies unless i'm out on lunch or something.

All I do is IM/Text on my phone while working..... can only do so much, sitting in a car with no radio all day.

However, if Im on the phone....and a radio call comes through, or someone flags us down its all business, and I rudely turn off the phone in the middle of calls lol
