    LCD Monitor size/quality questions

I've been thinking about going from a 20" to a 22" monitor. But, after looking into it, I'm not sure it's worth it for me right now.

I have a 20" Dell 2007WFP with an S-IPS panel. From what I've read, that panel type is one of the best for picture quality. That means a lot to me; I really like monitors with good colors and blacks. What I would like advice on, is how much of a quality drop would I see going from my monitor to something like these that are on sale at Best Buy now: $299 LG Monitor, $259 LG Monitor

I've tracked two used monitors that are the same as mine on Ebay that sold for around $280. So, the price differential isn't all that much. If there would be a really noticeable drop in picture quality, I'd probably just stick with what I have though. I'm not looking to spend much over $300.

Any advice or recommendations would be great.

Compared native resolutions, contrast ratios and response times?

I tend to hold native resolution and contrast in higher regard than the size, and so do most stores, as it affects the price greatly.

i use dual 22'' WFP from DELL and they work wonderfully. :3 I bought them during a sale and only ended up paying like $190 per. DELL monitors are pretty decent if you use it for the standered stuff, but if you do more hardcore gaming I'd prob go for something better. I just use my PC for FFXI, playing some anime, watching TV torrents if I miss HOUSE and homework coding.

If picture quality is detriment to your decision, stay away from TN panel displays

I prever S-PVA panels myself, over S-IPS, as IPS panels have severe input lag which can cripple image quality via ghosting, in high-framerate scenarios like gaming

S-PVA is sort of "The best of both worlds" in terms of between TN and IPS, it doesn't use color blending/gamuts which means it can display a true 16.7 million colors, and has a faster pixel response than IPS panels

IPS panels are what you want though, for color-corrective work as you'll have better contrasts and blacks, over VA and TN panels, however TN panels suffer from poor contrast and viewing angles

I picked up a 24" Soyo DYLM24D6 at Office Max earlier this year for $279, S-PVA panel 24" Widescreen, 1920x1200... IMO the best purchase I've ever made for a computer. Unfortunately, the $279 Soyo 24" screens are no longer S-PVA panels at 6ms, but rather TN panels @ 3ms, it was definitely a "Get them ASAP" deal, which was why I wasn't hesitant to go ahead and drop the cash on one

Huge drop in picture quality, those are both TN panels

Here's the BG thread about the Soyo screen I mentioned

I currently use this 22" flat panel LCD. I absolutely love it, although I got it slightly cheaper than this price during a sale.

Only slight criticism I have regarding it isn't related to the actual LCD, but rather the stand, which takes up a slight bit more room on your desk compared to most LCD stands.

How can you tell what panel type is being used in a particular model? I have an LG W1952TQ, and while I'm extremely happy with it, I do wonder what it has. I can't seem to find any specs on this monitor that indicate the panel type.

not to derail, but what exactly does 'panel type' indicate about a screen and why is TN not favorable?

    TFT panel types:

TN (Twisted Nematic): highest pixel response (2-4ms) worst color reproduction (Maximum true color output is ~350k I believe, not 16.7 million. To achieve 16.7 million, it blends colors together. The end result is a less vibrant image. blacks are washed out/"crushed"

VA (Vertical Allignment): second highest pixel response (6-8ms is the average), medium range color reproduction (Maximum true color output is 16.7 million colors). best blacks of all LCD panel types, good contrast (some slight shifting left-to-right), awesome viewing angles (colors do not invert like TN panels)

IPS (In-Plane Switching): worst pixel response (15-25+ms), highest range color reproduction (Maximum 16.7m colors). Best contrast of the three panel types, second best black reproduction, best color reproduction. IPS panels are used by professional video/image editing and color-correct work

for gaming, now, S-PVA (Super-Premium Vertical Allignment) is my preferred choice over TN, as graphics will look more vibrant, better contrast, wayyyyy better viewing angles than TN also (Meaning, moving to the left/right or above/below the screen does not cause any detrimental viewing issues)
