Brawl+: Hacking Competitiveness back into Brawl

Hi all. I don't want to cause any trouble.. I simply want to pass a message along. So if you are anti competitive smash, then please just save yourself the trouble of telling me I'm playing the game wrong and like.. leave and stuff.

    ---------

So, I've noticed that some people here play smash bros somewhat competitively, and I want to inform you guys about a project called Brawl+. Basically, the goal of the project is to bring back elements that were in the previous two smash bros game back into Brawl (this does NOT include wavedashing, and never will despite a wavedashing hack being available). Anyone who's been following competitive Brawl (and has played Melee and Smash64) knows very well how much of the core features that were in the previous two smash bros were simply removed. The ability to combo is extremely limited and as a result many characters simply cannot compete. Heavy characters with laggy aerials have a hard time approaching, and characters like Metaknight, Falco and Snake destroy everyone else because they can camp all day, or have an offensive game that no other character can match. Tourney matches have degenerated into camp fests and people only play the game to 'win' and not for fun anymore.. It's really quite upsetting.

Btw, If you guys like how Brawl is, that is 100% cool. Simply leave the thread or tell me why you think this project is an abomination. I will be more than happy to give you my opinion.

Anywho, I have brought what I hope some of you will believe is the answer: Brawl+.

Using a soft modded wii, one can get access to hacks that can do things from removing tripping and adding safer approaches for heavy characters such as Ike and Ganon, making captain falcon beastly as hell.. among other things. The project is pretty far along, and everyone who has played it enjoys it immensely, or at least more than regular Brawl. The matches are fast paced, intense and a ton of fun. It doesn't feel like melee, it doesn't feel like smash64.. it feels like a fast paced, action packed Brawl. The Brawl, many of us believe, should've been.

Before you guys dismiss the project, please just check out the thread I posted on smashboards. (lolsmashboards) What we've been able to accomplish, I personally think, is awesome, and I really want others to at least know about it, and know that there's an alternative to the slow paced game that we are familiar with.

What is Brawl+?: An FAQ - Smash World Forums

If you ARE interested, I am willing to answer any questions you guys have. I really just want people to know about it. I'm not asking anyone to play it, just to look at what we've been able to accomplish.

Sounds interesting, I have all the things needed to try it except Twilight so I could probably rent it and give it a try. Thanks for the link.

Alright, I'm kind of new to this whole wii hacking thing. I'm pretty sure I've got everything set up properly, but Gecko OS just locks up my wii.

This is all I get when I load it. No menu at all and I can't do anything but turn off the console. Google isn't helping and I didn't see any mention of the issue in the thread you linked. Wii is version 3.3 if it matters, any help would be appreciated.

oh wow. i've never seen that. i'll look into it. it may just have to do with a version mismatch or something. make sure that you're using the most updated version of everything.

then the people you play against suck lol

assuming your main character is ike, anyway. ike is good, but he's like any other heavy weight. fast characters are demons now, too.

Ignoring the stupid shit in this thread, this is quite an ambitious project. I am happy to see it pan out mostly successfully. Unfortunately it's not fully online compatible.

yes. unfortunately. however, if both parties have a wired connection, it greatly reduces the chance of desynch.

I should have said characters (since I play snake too) but ike is pretty beastly when he can flat out L cancel anything (and I play an aerial heavy ike anyway), if you're gonna say that the tournament scene in NY and NJ sucks then you're kind of out of your mind >_> (name dropping is silly but considering the names that go through my channel you're free to understand that the people I play are as far from "sucking" as you can probably get). It's enjoyable, but we go back to plain brawl rather quickly. The biggest setback to ike is the fact that approaching is a gamble, I'm not flat out outspeeded by much of any character except sonic marth and meta knight, and even so it's only in the right hands. With brawl+ that's not a concern, at all.

Bringing competitiveness back into a game isn't giving every character 0-death chains. Characters like falco and snake are camp heavy but they in NO way pigeonhole the game moreso than a character that can move freely like nobody's business, meta knight. Falco cant kill worth a damn and even mediocre characters can contend with snake as long as they have their head anywhere but up their asses (however i'm not gonna act like he isnt ridiculously imbalanced in terms of the whole package).

i never said the tournament scene in NY and NJ suck, i simply said if your friends can't handle brawl+ ike they suck at brawl+. they're probably not used to the changes. i know a lot of people who only played brawl and really aren't used to the increased hitstun or the increased need for teching (which is kind of a pain for some to get used to, especially since it's such a rarity in vanilla brawl).

the "l-cancel" is simply there to give ike, ganon, and other heavy weights a means of a way to approach. if your friends can't deal with that.. maybe they need to play some smash64

you have an interesting point regarding giving 0-death chains, but the fact is that it's simply not that easy if you're playing someone who knows what they're doing. to actually 0-death someone in brawl+, you need to tech chase, predict their DI and properly land the killing blow. it's hardly a 0-death combo. i can totally understand if you're new to this combo business, however. it's a completely new game, really. remember that all the values are user controllable too, so if the hitstun is too much you can turn it down a notch.

the point of this project is to make the game faster paced and give every character the tools necessary to be able to be decent in tournament play. i firmly believed at one point brawl had hitstun, but it was removed. with hitstun captain falcon gets the exact same combos he had in melee and smash64. isn't that strange? right now, the best falcon in the world couldn't beat a mediocre metaknight (a bit of an exaggeration, or is it?) and it's simply because a lot of the mechanics from smash64/melee -> brawl were removed. l-canceling and hitstun being the most important ones.

BUT, if you guys like regular brawl, that's cool. i'm just trying to spread the word. :]

I haven't even tried it yet, but I'm scared as to how ridiculously powerful this could potentially make a few of the heavies (namely Ike in this situation) due to being able to L-cancel his F-air/U-air.

An Ike player that already specializes heavily in aerials and minimizing attack lag, would get an insane, massive power boost from getting a no-risk F-air. That's just downright... broken. Massive range, decent power... and now, no delay even when you time it incorrectly as long as you know how to L-cancel? Broke.

Ike's already pretty damn quick, a lot faster than most people expect, in the right hands. Giving any of us that know how to speed him up this risk-free F-air courtesy of Melee-ish L-Cancelling... bad idea.

<3 melee but brawl wasn't designed for it
