Heath Ledger = The Joker?

im not sure how old this news is but i just found out about it, apparantly Heath Ledger is supposed to play The Joker in the upcoming film here is a pic of what he looks like in makeup:

I'm more concerned that they're putting Maggie Gyllenhaal in Katie Holmes' role. I have faith that Ledger can do a good job as the Joker, because I really didn't think he'd be a believable gay cowboy either, but he pulled it off. Gyllenhaal, however... I'll reserve judgment because I really haven't seen too much of her work, but I don't have the same confidence. If they're working with a decent script and a decent director, I don't see how it can suck any more than, say, Spider Man 3.

I hate her face, though. Literally.

I loves Stranger than Fiction, but I seriously burst out laughing in a few scenes because of her face. She just looks like a basset hound in the eye area. There's something droopy, puffy, and dark-circle-y about her eyes that just fucks up the rest of her face. And also, you have to consider the leading man in that movie. She was playing opposite Will Ferrell, who is not exactly known for his uncanny good looks. I think that's the only reason it was a fitting pair. If they'd put someone ridiculously attractive as the leading lady, it would have detracted from the movie.

Batman, however, kind of has a legacy of really strong actresses and/or good-looking women in its lead female roles. Kim Basinger, Nicole Kidman, Uma Thurman, Michelle Pfeiffer, Alicia Silverstone, Katie Holmes -- fuck, even Halle Berry in the shitty Catwoman spinoff. Almost all of those women are famous Hollywood beauties. Maggie Gyllenhaal just isn't. It's insincere to me. It would be like casting a mediocre-looking woman as a Bond girl. Yeah, you could do it and I'm sure she might do the part decently, but Bond girls are famous for being fucking hot. I've always thought Batman's love interests and female adversaries are kind of similar in that way.

Yeah, in certain lights from certain angles with certain make-up on and just the right conditions, she looks good. That's true of anyone, though. This is closer to what she looks like every day:

You get my point. Any time that she doesn't seem to have been put together by a team of professionals, her face can range anywhere from mediocre to haggard. I guarantee that if you were surrounded by a posse of people whose only job was to make sure you look good, then you would look good too.

Really, I wouldn't mind having her in the movie if she just didn't ever move. If they just had a floating headshot of her wherever she's supposed to be in the scene with a voice-over, then hell yeah. I'm in.

As an aside, I love Peter Sarsgaard. There is something creepy about him, though.

Really, Batman is too much of a crazy loner to really care about romance. That is one of the things that I have considered to be fail about the Batman movies, the closest thing to a romantic interest that Batman has is Catwoman.

P.S. That Joker makeup is total fail. Mark Hamill is the one and only Joker.

It had more to do with Katie Holmes not taking the role because of Tom Cruise than them just using someone else.

I think Maggie is the closest looking person to Katie they could have found in Hollywood with a decent resume.

I'm not anti-Maggie, I'm just anti-them using the Rachel Dawes character again. I thought they pretty much wrote her out of the story at the end of Batman Begins (in my mind) so they can move onto someone else.

Holmes was probably the only thing I disliked about BB, but I still hate when they change actors on characters. Oh well.

And to whoever said that Maggie only looks good in certain places/lighting...dead on.

About a week ago, my friends and I were hanging out at downtown and we saw them filming the scene of the next movie (they're filming it in Chicago like they did the last). The had the set pretty well covered up but we caught a glimpse of Christian Bale while they were leaving the set. It was cool

Yeah the original Matrix oracle died in real life and the woman that took over for her was a long time RL friend of the original and I believe they both were in plays together at one point in their careers which was why the brothers chose her. She knew the original so well she could pull off the part better then the others that were in the mix for the part.
