Bush wants 50 military bases, control of Iraqi airspace and legal immunity for all American soldiers and contractors.

A secret deal being negotiated in Baghdad would perpetuate the American military occupation of Iraq indefinitely, regardless of the outcome of the US presidential election in November.

The precise nature of the American demands has been kept secret until now. The leaks are certain to generate an angry backlash in Iraq. "It is a terrible breach of our sovereignty," said one Iraqi politician, adding that if the security deal was signed it would delegitimise the government in Baghdad which will be seen as an American pawn.

The US has repeatedly denied it wants permanent bases in Iraq but one Iraqi source said: "This is just a tactical subterfuge." Washington also wants control of Iraqi airspace below 29,000ft and the right to pursue its "war on terror" in Iraq, giving it the authority to arrest anybody it wants and to launch military campaigns without consultation.

Mr Bush is determined to force the Iraqi government to sign the so-called "strategic alliance" without modifications, by the end of next month. But it is already being condemned by the Iranians and many Arabs as a continuing American attempt to dominate the region.

How they fuck does one expect this NOT to be viewed as more US intrusion into the Middle East no doubt bound to further aggravate Muslims to no end? Immunity for soldiers and contractors from prosecution? What the fuck?

I think there's a little spin put into that report. The deal being worked out is basically to allow us to do everything we are doing now past the UN expiration date, which I guess involves those things. It's not a deal to let us do those things until the end of time. I mean aren't the bases in Iraq basically tractor trailers or something? We haven't been using concrete to even build our bases because we don't want to leave a "footprint".

How is our economy shit? We still have yet to have one quarter of negative growth, you need two for a recession. Referring to gas prices? Look at the politicians who don't want to drill for our own oil, which is both Dem's and Republicans.
