    Pld...Turtle tank or DD Pld?

Ok it's been a bit since I lvled Pld and my view on it seems old....Vit, def and hate gear. But been seeing DD Plds and tanking pretty good. Had a Pld/Sam that did a really good job.
So I was wondering....when did the DD Pld come out? Was it with ToA?

And not looking to start drama with this post if it starts any please lock it.

Mainly asking cause I have a Pld that's 64 now. And want to know if I should stick with the old Pld tanking....(turtle) or update my views on Pld for ToA tanking. Like new swords (other then Gultony sp) and wearing att and str gears...

    Also sniper's?

Sorry just trying to understand the new views on Pld cause mine are 04-05 Bibiki bay tank.

This is pretty much what I did while leveling. I didn't have any problems and held hate well. You'll get some tards that give you shit asking you why you're eatting sushi and not wearing VIT+over9000. Parties with those kind of people probably won't be very good anyway.

Edit: You'll still want to macro in enmity gear for cures/JAs etc.

This. Shield Mastery really is made of win for DD PLD. You'll be getting TP fairly quickly, and then putting it to good use. Hauby > Byrnie if the question happens to come up. Also, a trick I used was to Zerk before a WS then pop Defender to cancel it out rather than clicking it off. This way, you can click off Defender and WS again with Zerk up before canceling to get 2 uses out of it. I also recommend flashing during those periods so you don't get slammed with Zerk up. Could also use Sentinel after that second WS and ride out Zerk for an extra few seconds rather than clicking it off right away.

As an aside, something that makes me cry every time I see it is when PLDs use Sentinel before they're on a mob's hate list... It should be against the law to waste 1800 VE... Don't even get me started on PLDs that use Sentinel and then don't use any other hate moves during it...

    DD all the way 60+

One thing I don't understand is how can some people play PLD (on the way to 75) and DON'T notice the minimal/tiny/none-existant difference VIT/DEF makes as you climb towards higher levels. Commonly in most RPG games putting some new gear with bonuses to VIT/DEF normally means you take less damage, in FFXI this is completely subverted (at the end of the spectrum).

Yes this fucks me off a lot. i.e. some pickup group for a boss in MMM, we were preparing for the fight, when we were ready we sent the PLD in first:

    Sentinel >> Engage >> Flash

    AAARRRGHHHHH. WHYYYYY. WRRRRYYYY.

Stack shield skill, and fill every other spot with DD gear and you're totally golden.

If it dies faster you're going to take fewer hits. So you'll take less dmg over time and get faster exp. Dunno why people try to tank exp mobs like hnm.

Its not like you have to stick to one set of gear for everything....

put in all your AF for the enmity on flash and voke and swap in haub and acc pieces when you use vorpal blade.

i never swap'd more than rings/belt/neck for enmity, i only swap'd visible gear for WS. I would still prefer sword/shield tho if /war it's a lot harder w/o shield.

No. You can just talk about it now without getting called a noob.

Got something like chain #80 in cape terrigan with a DD pld before CoP even came out. It just takes the masses awhile to catch on, though the expwatch plugin is speeding up the process.

Oh man. Oh... Oh man. I need to go sit down.

At least he didn't Invincible before being on the hate list. I've seen that shit before.

It can depend slightly on the camp...or more specifically, the level difference. Generally I did what people have said here, shield gear + DD (except, use Woodsman rings, not Sniper's), macroing Enmity stuff.

Part of this though is not overcamping in the first place. For some camps, I'd use Tacos initially, then swap to Sushi once I'd leveled once or twice. Mainly because my static went to them a little early. IMO, it's good to be prepared to adapt some like that. Generally you'll be fine with DD gear/sushi at the point where mobs are at an ideal level for the party (high VT/low IT type stuff).

Like new swords (other then Gultony sp) and wearing att and str gears...
A potential one to go with is the Company Fleuret, given the number of piercing weak mobs in ToAU camps. Regular DoT is decent in a full party anyway. Otherwise, Tactician Magician's Espadon (+1) to Espadon (+1) to Joyeuse (or whatever other 70+ option is feasible for you, Company Sword is good too).

I had a run on Snoll Tzar, Pld went in to pull with flash > invincible while we chainspell fire'D him to death right?

He hits wrong macro, or was moving slightly or something, and pops invincible THEN aggros snoll.

k thanks for the info. I just have to get the full time turtle Pld thing out of my head and dig through my gears for a good DD set for Pld and refine my macros.

50~ before Bird Camp, while in Kuftal I had fun dual weilding Tactician Magician Espadons as PLD/NIN still being able to keep hate on Crabs.Cuz for some reason I had like 5 parties in a row where i was in a pt with another PLD or a NIN and so I had to share tanking duties.

My usual "must keep hate for exactly 1 minute" routine for something like Snoll was something like:

Provoke --> Sentinel --> Flash --> Shield Bash --> Cure3/4 (as applicable) --> Invinclble (before Sentinel wore off) --> Provoke (after waiting a few seconds) --> Flash (after waiting a few seconds) --> Cure3/4 (as applicable) --> etc.

Assuming you can get off Invincible with about 3-4 seconds left during Sentinel, not only do you get almost a solid minute of damage reduction, you can also literally ride the hate cap for a full minute plus depending on your MP situation, and how well you ride your recasts.

Snoll was a joke once my RDM didn't "accidently" chainspell before we even aggroed the damn flying shit ball, and then start blowing all his MP before i managed to voke it ad got himself killed... I was still resting MP dammit! -_-

I've seen a few people do Sentinel --> Invincible immediately afterwards, and I don't really understand why. You waste the Enmity from the original Sentinel itself, and pretty much make the damage reduction during it pointless as well. I mean sure, you cap your VE immediately, but its not hard to do in 15 seconds even without Invincible... Even when I did my Dynamis Lord fight, I still waited to pop invincible until about 15 seconds after Sentinel went off.
