    New router/modem/wireless adapter

So I just got a new Netgear router/modem and a Netgear PCI adapter to go with it for my computer. I'm connected and it's fine (posting from my wireless connection atm) but if I open uTorrent my ping on ventrilo skyrockets to 2-4k. That didn't happen with my old router/adapter combo and I'm wondering what settings I might be missing that would have this happen. I've tried looking at netgear and I've forwarded some ports for what apps I could find, but it's not fixing my ping while torrenting. Any ideas?

How much of your bandwidth are your torrents taking? If your downloads/uploads are taking up most of your bandwidth, it will boggle down any other applications that use your internet. You can check out your router's config settings to prioritize these applications or limiting your torrent speeds. If that's not the case, then I dunno.

    This.

Limit your upload rate to 75-85% of your maximum capacity (or even less) and if you wanna play it safe, give yourself 90% of your download capacity. This will ensure that there is adequate bandwidth available for Ventrilo.

I've been limiting my upload speeds to only 35 kb/s since forever. I also limit the number of connections per torrent to 20/30 peers as my last router couldn't handle many connections at once. My router claims my connection speed is: DownStream Connection Speed 3360 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 736 kbps on the line, but I've found that going over about 40 kb/s upload starts to bog down my line a lot.

I think I need to return this router/adapter, my connection has been terrible over the last few days. I was getting CONSTANT disconnects from WoW, even though I wouldn't lag on vent at all, most of the time. Like the last boss kill was 15s in-game, 30s offline, 15s in-game, 30s offline, repeat until we won, but if WoW locked up at all I could key up on vent and tell my guild and they'd get it right away and be able to take action in response to it without any delay.

Any suggestions on a specific brand to pick up? I have DSL and need the router upstairs (2nd floor) to connect to my computer in basement. There's really no option to move where the computers are or router needs to be, I just need a wireless adapter/router that can communicate that distance. I think it's pretty sad that this Netgear combo has performed far worse than the 5 year old router/adapter I have from Verizon (which also doesn't work anymore for me).

Also, any reason to get Wireless-N? I haven't looked into it much, this Netgear stuff claims it's Wireless-N which is a billion times better than Wireless-G, but it performs much less. Do I need something else to get Wireless-N to work or something?

Wireless-N only seems viable to me if you want to stream HD media wirelessly because you can't lay down any CAT5 cable in your house. If you can put cabling down, or you already have it, you'd be better investing in a 10/100/1000mbps switch, and adapters for your computers (very few onboard network adapters support 1000mbps speeds, but it's always worth checking, to avoid spending unnecessary money)

Otherwise, I'd choose a router which is supported by DD-WRT, as I can say with some authority that whatever router you choose to buy, it wont have the number of features that they pack into DD-WRT on it's stock firmware.

This is the page you can use for checking whether a router is supported Supported Hardware
And here is a forum full of suggestions and best buys from the DD-WRT contributors DD-WRT Forum :: View Forum - Generic Questions

Seems that the WHR-300N from Buffalo is a strong contender, but the firmware isn't fully supported as of yet, though they are working on it aparently, as it is a very popular model. Other suggestions seem to be the usual brands (Belkin, Netgear et. al.)
