FFXI crash when zoning

Happens totally at random. Some days I can zone 100x without crashing and other days it happens every other zone. I've tried:

Disabling Windower plugins
Disabling non-essential background processes/services
Running PoL+FFXI file checks
Registry checks
Lower FFXI settings

Next step would be to reinstall but I'm trying to avoid that. It takes about 6 minutes to kick off my char when this happens(probably because I'm between zones when it happens). Any ideas?

does it crash in any specific areas? dat mods at all?

It happens most often when I zone into the MH and I don't have any mods there.

But you are running some dat mods?

I'm guessing still a corrupted dat somewhere. My other question, do you update FFXI while running windower? Because sometimes windower has been known to corrupt dat files when updating. Never update from within windower. (Yes, I know 99% of the time it works fine. But you don't want to be the one that gets the 1%)


Do a file check of POL and FFXI before you reinstall. Maybe with some luck it will catch it. If not, you are only left with reinstalling if you haven't made a backup of all the original files that have been modded.

I had an issue similar to this and would crash when ever a SAM would WS, turned out to be a .dat like DAK stated.

I did file check and it kept hanging on a certain # .dat; I used process explorer from sysinternals to determine which folder the corrupted .dat was in, deleted and ran file check again.

Thought I'd through that out there as Vista didn't seem to care for the corrupted .dat when running the file check.

Edit: nvm I see you did the file checks in the OP.

Yeah the file check returned 319 corrupted files which were all dat mods but I replaced them anyway. Didn't help. I think I'm just going to reinstall and play on my laptop until it gets done updating.
