PS3 AV cable damage?

So I just got home from school and I plug in my PS3 to learn that it's not working. I run aroudn feverishly looking for a TV with HDMI to make sure it's not the PS3 itself. So it works with the HDMI but not with the AV, assuming it's the cable itself and not the port on the PS3. So... what exactly causes damage to the cord? I haven't been using the cord at all since I had HDMI on my TV at school. I find it quite odd that it stopped working, bleh. And does anyone know either a quick fix or a cheap cord?

Edit: recently got Fios as well, I assume the HDMI port on the back of the box is output onry?

wait.. did u take it from HDMI tv and try to put it on a standard tv through AV cables?
Did you remember to reset the ps3 so it outputs through the AV cables?

Oh dammit, I guess I need to hook it up to an HDMI TV to navigate through huh?

no just plug it with the AV cables. Then hold the Power button down when you turn it on. Till it beeps the 2nd time. Should reset it.
